Governor Slaveski Announces Regulatory Changes for Banking Services

Newly inaugurated Governor Trajko Slaveski announced the implementation of legal changes designed to regulate the provision of banking services during his first meeting. The announcement, made on the first day of his mandate, focuses on establishing clearer guidelines for the sector. Governor Slaveski stated that he has already begun to assess the existing banking services landscape since the start of his term.

He characterized the current services as “fair and genuine,” asserting they are comparable to essential utilities such as electricity, water, and natural gas, as well as telecommunication services. Drawing a parallel, the governor cited examples from European nations, including Croatia, where legislation has been enacted to offer free banking services. These measures include free account opening and closing procedures, and the removal of fees for utilizing payment terminals.

Currently, discussions are ongoing between Governor Slaveski’s office and the Macedonian Bank Association regarding the specifics of these regulatory changes. His administration intends to ensure a transparent and accessible banking system for all citizens. The goal is to establish a framework that aligns with best practices while providing consistent services.
