Greece Addresses Border Crossing Challenges with EU and North Macedonia
Athens, Greece – Deputy Minister for Internal Affairs of Greece, Konstantinos Giulekas, responsible for the regions of Macedonia and Thrace, addressed concerns regarding border crossings with the European Union and North Macedonia during a conference organized by the Greek informational portal “Voria.” The discussion centered on ongoing efforts to streamline border procedures and improve efficiency. Giulekas highlighted the potential for temporary suspension of biometric registration as permitted by European regulations. He also outlined plans to implement modular control points at Evzone stations, a strategic move intended to reduce waiting times.
This involves transforming existing border strips into two separate lanes for enhanced processing. The Deputy Minister emphasized the progress being made on the planned border crossing with Turkey, noting that completion of the Evzone stations on Greek territory remains a key priority. However, he acknowledged limitations on flexibility until the modernization project is fully realized.
“Until the full modernization of the Evzone stations is complete, we have limited options for significant adjustments to border procedures,” Giulekas stated, according to a press release distributed by the Athens IA. The discussion reflects ongoing efforts to manage the flow of traffic and address challenges related to the macedonian border situation within Greece. Further details regarding the text of the planned changes are expected to be released as the project progresses.
This initiative is part of a broader strategy to improve border security and facilitate trade.
