Radev: Macedonia Must Meet Bulgarian Preconditions for EU Accession
TIVAT, June 6, 2026 – Bulgarian Prime Minister Rumen Radev stated yesterday that Macedonia must fully implement the conditions outlined by Bulgaria for progressing towards EU membership. Speaking in Tivat while studying the Western Balkans’ EU framework, Radev emphasized the need for reforms across several key areas. These reforms, according to Radev, include significant changes within the justice system, the rule of law, the protection of human rights, and the establishment of positive relations with neighboring countries.
He stressed that any opening of negotiations should align with the principles of Macedonia’s sovereign achievements. Radev reiterated Bulgaria’s stance on avoiding the importation of historical and political challenges into the European Union. “We will continue to maintain this position,” he affirmed.
He also expressed appreciation for the efforts of Albania in meeting the prerequisites for its own membership candidacy. The statement reflects ongoing discussions surrounding the normalization of relations between Bulgaria and Macedonia, a critical factor in the country’s path toward EU integration. The Prime Minister’s comments highlight the substantial work required to satisfy Bulgarian demands and secure the next steps for Macedonia.
