July is recognized globally as a month dedicated to raising awareness about reducing plastic waste. The scale of this environmental challenge is significant; according to a report from the World Wildlife Fund (WWF), an estimated 95% of all current waste found in the oceans and seas is plastic. This accumulation of plastic waste poses dangers to various forms of life and presents risks to human health.
Addressing the source of the pollution, data highlights substantial production rates across the European Union. Andrea Čović Vidić, Deputy Chief of the Presidency of the European Commission in Croatia, noted that the EU currently produces approximately 150 kilograms of plastic per person annually. She added that Croatia’s per capita output stands at 81 kilograms, noting that Bulgaria records a lower figure.
These statistics underscore a considerable waste issue at the continental level. The sheer volume of plastic entering the waste stream requires substantial systemic change. Managing the lifecycle of plastic materials—from production to disposal—remains a critical global priority.
Efforts are increasingly focused on mitigating the flow of plastic waste into natural ecosystems to safeguard marine and terrestrial environments.
