The Ministry of Justice of the FSA is investigating whether Iran has used the “Bayanens” crypto-currency

The Ministry of Justice and the Financial Services Authority are investigating whether Iran utilized the large cryptocurrency exchange, binance, to evade sanctions, according to reports from the Wall Street Journal and The Times of Israel. The investigation centers on examining potential misuse of the platform. It remains unclear whether binance itself is directly involved in the scrutiny or if the focus is on its users.

The situation is not unexpected, given the legal framework prohibiting the funding of terrorist organizations. As of November, over $1.7 billion was identified as having been transferred “from cinematic clients to digital money customers of Iran,” with the intention of financing associated groups. Notably, this included the Yemeni terrorist group, the Houthis.

Following the initial concerns, binance has been cleared by the investigative team. The inquiry seeks to determine whether the exchange facilitated illicit activities and circumvented financial restrictions. The investigation explores whether the platform was used to support sanctioned entities.
