The Regional Court in Minchen has convicted several individuals of membership in the terrorist organization Islamic State (ISIS). During the proceedings, Majot, whose identity is protected under German privacy laws as Tanah X. S., was sentenced to life imprisonment.
The charges against him included genocide, war crimes, crimes against humanity, and the serious sexual abuse of children. His wife, Asia R. A., was separately sentenced to nine and a half years in prison under juvenile law.
The couple received these sentences in Bavaria in 2024. The legal proceedings addressed atrocities committed during the group’s rise to power. The context of the crimes involves the Yazidis, a Kurdish religious minority, who were expelled from the Islamic State when the jihadist organization gained control over areas in Syria and Iraq starting in 2014.
During this period, numerous atrocities were committed against them. The records detail that members of the group were responsible for the deaths of many, and in one documented instance, ten women and children were captured and forcibly conscripted to fight when the Islamic State attacked their community. The court proceedings underscored the severity of the crimes committed against them.
These convictions highlight the legal accountability for membership in and actions taken by the group. Both individuals were consequently sentenced to significant terms of incarceration, marking a significant judicial outcome regarding the group’s activities.
