Furthermore, Macedonian citizens residing in Italy report that their permits cannot simply be substituted by Italian drivers, requiring them instead to pay a specific, one-off fee. According to reports from these citizens, local car rental companies have indicated that they are obliged to pay a tax if a driver’s permit lapses for several months and the driver is not an EU national.
To facilitate the replacement of the vehicle, these companies reportedly require the driver to obtain an international permit. This situation has been partially corroborated by official channels. The Ministry of Interior’s website confirms the existence of a bilateral contract between the country of origin and Italy.
However, the official documentation also specifies that, within the Republic of Italy, the stipulated process is currently “not possible.”
These conflicting reports suggest a regulatory gap or complication affecting the mobility of Macedonian nationals within Italy. The requirement for specific documentation and fees highlights a divergence between the stated international agreements and the practical implementation standards enforced by local businesses in Italy.
