Minister of Health Sašo Klepovski visited the “Dr. Firdus Bej” hospital in Gostivar, where he provided an update on an ongoing outbreak of gastrointestinal illness. During his address, he reported that in the last 24 hours, 260 people requiring treatment for stomach problems were managed by the facility.
These figures were broken down, noting that 100 patients were treated in the children’s department, while 160 were seen in the infectious diseases department. The cluster of cases was first identified at the hospital on the evening of July 13, and authorities confirmed that the total number of affected people now exceeds 1,000. In conjunction with the health updates, investigators from the Food and Veterinary Agency (FVA), alongside police and representatives from the Ministry of Livestock and Rural Affairs, conducted an inspection.
Their findings revealed the illegal installation of a pump within the main shaft, which was found to be directly spraying water sourced from the Vardar River. Klepovski stated that the affected patients are presenting with symptoms including diarrhea and vomiting, with some individuals also exhibiting fever and requiring hospitalization. The official investigation into the water source and the subsequent spread of the illness remains ongoing as health authorities manage the influx of people seeking care at the hospital.
