A complete overview of the electricity in Cuba

A recent report indicated that the region experienced its third power outage within a two-week period. According to the state workers’ union of electricity, the disruption stemmed from an issue at a production unit located on the Holgin border. The unit reportedly caused “unpredictable changes in the frequency” of the grid, which subsequently led to the multi-hour power outage that occurred near noon local time.

Authorities from the Ministry of Energy and Mines, alongside the Workers’ Union of Electricity, stated that “protocols for unauthorized access were activated” in response to the instability. This response resulted in several key infrastructure points, including hospitals and food processing factories, losing access to reliable power. By noon, media reports confirmed that electricity service was suspended in certain businesses throughout the main city of Havana.

Officials reported that the disruption impacted an estimated four percent of the general population. The incident highlights ongoing challenges with the stability of the local power supply. The operational failure suggests a vulnerability within the regional electricity infrastructure, necessitating the activation of emergency protocols to manage the resulting power outage across multiple sectors.
