The incidence of gastrointestinal problems among newly arrived migrants in Gostivar continues to be a concern, with daily arrivals remaining high. Authorities report that the number of new cases is fluctuating between 250 and 300 individuals daily. According to the Minister of Health, Sašo Klepovski, hospital admissions remain elevated.
Yesterday, admissions were recorded at the children’s department, totaling 100 cases, alongside 160 patients in the Intensive Care Department. Today, the situation shows a similar number of children admitted to the children’s department, while the Intensive Care Department reported approximately 200 patients. The Ministry has declared an epidemic and stated that necessary preventative measures have been implemented.
While the Minister acknowledged that Macedonia has previously managed outbreaks such as measles, he emphasized that the current situation, which appears linked to water or food transmission, requires specific attention. Investigations are actively underway to pinpoint the precise source of the outbreak. Water analysis results are anticipated tomorrow, and comprehensive epidemiological surveys are being conducted among the general population to determine the exact cause.
Authorities are monitoring the situation closely, ensuring that all relevant medical department services are operational. The continuous monitoring of the patient load, particularly within the specialized department for children, remains a priority as public health officials assess the scope of the issue there.
