The government should abandon concessions for geological exploration, the citizens’ organizations should be involved

Twenty-six distinct grassroots organizations, initiatives, and platforms operating out of Vlatadon have formally challenged the proposed development of a borax and gold mine in Ilovica. These groups are advocating for the revocation, significant modification, or the imposition of stringent additional conditions on the concession granted for prospecting geological and mineral resources. The opposition has formalized its stance through submissions made in December 2025 and again in June of the same year.

The protest efforts reference specific public calls, including those related to “North-Northwest” and “Istočok,” alongside an initial public call issued in February 2025, and any subsequent calls derived from these initial submissions. Among the prominent organizations involved are the Foundation for Internet and Society Metamorphosis, Centaur for the exploitation and information for the living environment Ecosavvy, Green Human City, O2 Initiative, and the Grassroots Platform. These coordinated actions represent a unified front of civil society organizations concerned with environmental impact and resource management.

The collective effort highlights a sustained pushback against the mining venture. By mobilizing across multiple platforms, these grassroots groups aim to halt or fundamentally alter the process of resource extraction. The focus of their advocacy remains on ensuring that any future exploitation of geological resources adheres to rigorous environmental and social standards, challenging the current concession framework through coordinated legal and public pressure.
