Data from the State Statistics Institute indicates that the Macedonian tourism sector experienced moderate growth in May 2026. During the month, the country hosted 131,723 tourists, who accounted for a total of 236,727 nights. Analysis of the visitor demographics reveals that foreign tourists constituted the majority, representing 81 percent of the total visitors, while domestic tourists made up the remaining 19 percent.
Similarly, foreign guests dominated the overnight stays, accounting for 75.8 percent of the nights, compared to 24.2 percent from domestic sources. On a month-over-month basis, the number of tourists in May increased by 0.8 percent, and the number of nights recorded a 2.3 percent rise. This month’s slight increase in total tourists was attributed to a significant shift in the visitor profile: domestic tourists saw a rise of 5.2 percent, while the influx of foreign tourists decreased by 14.7 percent.
