On July 9th, the European Parliament voted to commence discussions with the European Union regarding a digital euro. This development is expected to influence citizen reliance on EU public service providers in a gradual manner. EU envoys are now prepared to initiate negotiations with relevant authorities concerning the operational framework of the digital euro.
The European Parliament passed the necessary votes to advance the legislative process to its next phase. The final tally for the creation of the digital euro showed 416 “yes” votes, 169 “no” votes, and 22 abstentions. Furthermore, the Parliament approved the establishment of a fund designed to compensate providers of public services utilizing the euro.
However, the decision was met with opposition from certain political groups. Specifically, the “European Conservatives and Reformists” and “Patriots for Europe” groups have challenged the decisions made by the Committee on Economic and Monetary Affairs on June 23, 2026, concerning the initiation of the interinstitutional negotiations for the digital euro. The passage of these votes signals a significant step toward implementing a digital version of the euro.
The negotiations will focus on establishing the technical and operational guidelines for this new digital currency, aiming to integrate it smoothly into the existing financial infrastructure across the EU.
