Ljutkov: Macedonian language is not a political dust, it is a national harm

Minister of Culture and Tourism Zoran Lyutkov stated that the status of the Macedonian language is not a political issue, but rather a matter of national concern. Speaking at a supervisory action titled “Inoperative and unfulfilled application of the provisions of the Law on the Use of the Macedonian language,” which took place on July 6, 2026, Lyutkov asserted that the shortcomings in implementing the existing law stem from a prolonged lack of systematic enforcement, institutional inertia, and a deficit in political commitment. During the event, Lyutkov emphasized the need for the focus to remain on factual evidence rather than on political credentials.

He argued that the proper safeguarding of the Macedonian language requires unified national enforcement. The address highlighted that the current challenges surrounding the Macedonian language are rooted in systemic failures rather than mere disagreements. Lyutkov called for a comprehensive national effort to ensure the law is consistently and effectively applied across all sectors.

This perspective frames the maintenance of the Macedonian language as a fundamental national imperative that transcends partisan political debates. The minister stressed that the priority must be the objective collection and presentation of facts to address the observed gaps in legal compliance.
