A group of milk producers from the “Simental” Association in Delcze, accompanied by colleagues from the Istok and Strumyani regions, recently protested concerning measures intended to safeguard the domestic production of milk. As captured in an archive photo from July 2020, the participants asserted their right to continue doing what they believed was necessary to protect their local industry. The representatives stated that they had formally submitted documentation regarding their barns to the Ministry of Agriculture’s office, with records reportedly directed to the minister’s cabinet.
Furthermore, they indicated that they had briefed deputies within the Assembly on the matter. While acknowledging that home production currently accounts for only 60 percent of the overall market, the group voiced significant concerns regarding external pressures on the sector. According to their statements, the primary challenge stems from the uncontrolled importation of pasteurized milk and milk originating from Serbia.
The producers argued that this influx of foreign products is exerting undue pressure on the stability and viability of local, home-produced milk supplies. The protest highlighted a persistent tension between supporting local agricultural output and managing the impact of international market trade. The core demand articulated by the association remains the need for regulatory oversight to ensure that domestic producers can operate in a fair and sustainable environment.
