Public Sector Employment Data Reveals Disparities in North Macedonia

New data released on June 23, 2026, from the Registration of Employees in the public sector highlights significant differences in employment rates within North Macedonia’s state institutions. A review conducted by the ministry and consultations with the Albanian community indicate that approximately 50% of employees at the national level are of ethnic Albanian origin. Notably, 40% of those employed within the state sector identify as Albanian.

The data, pertaining to 2025, reveals a breakdown across government ministries. Among the 129,793 employees, 66.35% are Macedonian nationals, while 26.03% are Albanians. Further analysis indicates a concerning trend: individuals forced into employment within the public sector are three times more prevalent among the non-Macedonian portion of the workforce.

A National Prosecutor is overseeing the investigation into these figures. The report emphasizes the ongoing increase in public sector employment numbers and underscores the need for continued scrutiny of workforce composition and employment conditions across various government departments. The data represents a key area of focus for the ministry as it seeks to ensure equitable representation and address potential systemic imbalances within the public sector.
