UEFA will not introduce “ad breaks” as they do at the World Cup

UEFA Confirms Decisions on Tournament Format, Rejecting New Break Policies

UEFA has affirmed its decision to not introduce advertising breaks or monitor FIFA’s conduct, following a recent Congress held on June 22, 2026, at 10:03 a.m. The announcement addresses concerns raised regarding changes implemented after the UEFA World Cup. The UEFA governing body has opted not to replicate the temporary “refreshment breaks” utilized during the World Cup, which were introduced due to high summer temperatures.

These breaks, scheduled around the 22nd and 67th minutes of matches, were met with significant dissatisfaction from tournament organizers. Specifically, UEFA will not implement excessive hydration breaks within its flagship competitions, including the Champions League and the 2028 European Championship. This stance reflects a desire to maintain the traditional flow of play and avoid disruptions to the established game format.

Previously, FIFA had independently decided to introduce these breaks irrespective of weather conditions, a decision that generated considerable opposition, particularly from tournament organizers. The focus remains on upholding the integrity and established rhythms of UEFA’s premier football events.
