Kičevo to Actively Participate in National Energy Transition
Kičevo, North Macedonia, is poised to play a key role in the country’s national energy transformation processes, according to discussions held recently. Successful integration hinges on the collaboration of the city’s robust local institutions, active citizen engagement, and transparent governance. A forum, organized by the Eco-save society with local partners, focused on strategies for a fair transition, particularly concerning the region’s reliance on the Oslomej TEC coal plant.
Representatives from across sectors – including local authorities, Oslomej TEC, the business sector, trade unions, citizens’ organizations, and educational institutions – were present. A central discussion point was the potential activation of the Local Economic and Social Council (LESS) for Kičevo, established last year but currently inactive. Experts emphasized that the full participation of local authorities is crucial in developing policies for regions dependent on energy production.
The goal is to ensure that the transition process is locally driven and incorporates the perspectives of all stakeholders. Further steps will involve actively engaging local communities and fostering transparent administration to support the region’s future development. The initiative highlights the importance of local involvement in national energy strategies.
