In Macedonia, the highest temperature was measured in the last 70 years

Low Temperatures Recorded Across North Macedonia in Early May

The beginning of May saw exceptionally low air temperatures across several regions of North Macedonia, with readings among the lowest recorded in the last 70 years. Data released by the Hydrometeorological Department indicates that the average minimum temperature for May was exceeded at meteorological stations in Berovo, Kriva Palanka, Shtip, Demir Kapija, and Ohrid. Specifically, the lowest minimum air temperature measured during the month was -4.6 degrees Celsius, recorded in Berovo on May 4th.

This represents a significant deviation from typical May temperatures. Globally, May 2024 was identified as the second hottest May in recorded history by the Copernicus Climate Change Service (C3S) of the European Union. The unusually warm temperatures are attributed to ongoing climate change and the influence of the El Niño phenomenon, which has contributed to global warming and shifts in sea shore temperatures.

The observed temperature fluctuations highlight a complex interplay of regional and global climate factors. Further monitoring is underway to assess the long-term implications of these readings.
