Experts Call for National System to Address Soil-Based Plastics in Macedonia
Strumica, Macedonia – A national system for managing soil-based plastics is being advocated following a recent workshop focused on the issue. The event, held on June 16, 2026, in Strumica, was organized by the Municipality of Strumica with support from the “IME” program – Swiss Program for the Completion of Market Transparency. The discussion centered around several key questions regarding the use of these materials within Macedonia.
Specifically, experts sought clarification on the current regulatory framework surrounding soil-based plastics. Researchers also investigated the extent of their production and usage, alongside the impact of their utilization on soil quality. A significant area of concern was the annual tonnage of soil used in production and its subsequent effect on the livestock environment.
The workshop aimed to determine what happens with the soils during this process. Participants explored preconditions for an optimal system solution, including potential applications of European best practices. Further investigation is needed to understand the volume of soil-based plastics currently in use and to assess their environmental impact.
The goal is to establish a framework for responsible management and, potentially, recycling of these materials.
