Strong Earthquake Causes Damage and Casualties in Southern Philippines
A strong earthquake struck the southern Philippines, resulting in at least 15 fatalities and 129 injuries, according to the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS). The earthquake, with a depth of 10 kilometers, occurred near the coast of General Santos, a city located on Mindanao, the Philippines’ main southern island. The event was felt across several countries, including Indonesia and Japan, prompting tsunami warnings in affected regions.
PHIVOLCS issued the warnings following the seismic activity. Coastal areas, particularly those near General Santos, were placed under evacuation orders by Philippine authorities. Disruptions to essential services were also reported, with the supply of electricity and communication networks impacted in the Sarangani coastal area, close to the earthquake’s epicenter.
Ongoing monitoring is being conducted by PHIVOLCS to assess the full extent of the damage and potential aftershocks. Further updates will be provided as more information becomes available.
