OUR HEALTH: The audit created chaos and theft in our health service

Investigation Reveals Discrepancies in Macedonian Broadband Project

A significant investment in a new internet cable project has raised concerns regarding transparency and accountability. The 15-kilometer cable, purchased for €15,000, remains largely unused, with a substantial number of computers, laptops, and phones acquired as part of the initiative. Initial contracts for mobile telecommunication services totaled 1.6 million dinars, while a fixed telephony contract was initially valued at 550,000 dinars.

Investigations are underway to determine the full extent of the expenditure. The Institute for Health (IHZ) recently conducted work establishing the project’s management structure, and during this process, some missing funds were identified. Furthermore, an audit of funds overseen by IMA director Maria Andonovska at the Institute had not been conducted since 2017, resulting in a lack of oversight.

Director Andonovska stated she would provide further details at a forthcoming conference. The situation highlights concerns surrounding financial controls and the execution of contracts. The investigation is ongoing, focusing on clarifying the details of which contracts were finalized and the whereabouts of the remaining funds.

It underscores the importance of regular audits within public projects, particularly those impacting the health sector.
