Macron said that the French navy would seize a tanker carrying oil from Russia to the Atlantic

French Navy Boarded Sanctioned Tanker in Atlantic Ocean

Paris, France – The French Navy conducted an operation to intercept a tanker carrying oil subject to international sanctions, according to a statement by French President Emmanuel Macron. The incident occurred in the Atlantic Ocean, supported by partners including the United Kingdom, and was carried out in accordance with maritime law. Macron, speaking on X (formerly Twitter), detailed the operation.

“This operation was carried out in the Atlantic Ocean, on the high seas, with the support of a few partners, including the United Kingdom, in strict compliance with maritime law,” he said. The intercepted tanker, named Tahrir, had reportedly sailed from Russia. Macron emphasized the seriousness of the situation, stating, “It is unthinkable that they would be surrounded by international sanctions, that they would undermine maritime law and finance the war that Russia is waging against Ukraine for more than four years.”

The Atlantic Prefecture of the Atlantic confirmed on Monday that the French Navy intervened with the Tahrir tanker.

President Macron’s statement highlighted the ongoing efforts to enforce sanctions and prevent the flow of resources supporting the conflict in Ukraine. The operation underscores continued international scrutiny of maritime trade routes and the commitment to upholding international law.
