Mitzkoiski Criticizes Bulgaria’s Stance on North Macedonia’s EU Accession

Skopje – Foreign Minister Hristijan Mitzkoiski responded to Bulgarian Minister for Foreign Affairs Velislava Petrova’s recent assertion that North Macedonia should present solutions rather than problems, and that Sofia should remain within the 2022 agreed framework. Mitzkoiski expressed concern over what he perceived as a lack of respect for a resolution regarding human rights. He cited findings from the European Court of Human Rights in Strasbourg, noting 14 cases where the court ruled against North Macedonia.

Mitzkoiski stated that the process of European integration should not be utilized as a tool for political pressure directed at North Macedonia. “The number of people who have not been in the spirit of European values is not in the air,” Mitzkoiski commented. He emphasized the need for consistent application of standards across all candidate countries.

The comments from Mitzkoiski come amidst ongoing negotiations regarding North Macedonia’s path to EU membership. The Minister reiterated the importance of mutual respect and adherence to established legal frameworks during the accession process.
