Tax officials operating at the Virgin Mary border crossing seized 5,000 untaxed cigarettes, valued at nine million dinars. The contraband was discovered during a routine inspection of a truck scheduled to transit goods from Greece into Serbia. Consequently, the driver, identified as Serbian, was brought under suspicion of smuggling activities.

A formal criminal complaint has since been filed against the driver with the main prosecutor’s office in Gevgelija. According to sources within the customs authority, the vehicle was documented as transporting building materials, specifically stone. During the final, detailed inspection process, officials discovered 100 unaccounted boxes.

Each box contained 50 cigarettes, resulting in a total seizure of 5,000 cigarettes that lacked the requisite tax stamps and were not authorized for transport. The incident underscores the customs agency’s rigorous monitoring procedures at the border crossing. The authorities confirmed that the investigation has concluded based on the physical evidence found.

The discovery of the undeclared and untaxed cigarettes has initiated the formal legal proceedings against the driver. The focus of the investigation remains on the illegal movement of these goods across the border into Serbian territory.
