The United States and Saudi Arabia recently signed a new agreement aimed at civil nuclear cooperation. The deal was formalized by the US Energy Secretary, Chris Wright, and Saudi Energy Minister, Prince Abdulaziz bin Salman. The pact, termed “Agreement 123,” is structured as a tripartite agreement intended to facilitate the supply of nuclear technology from American companies to Saudi Arabia.
However, the implementation of the deal is subject to Congressional approval. Despite the signing of the agreement, which also included a supplementary security guarantee pact, significant political developments followed. Just one day after the announcement, Donald Trump publicly introduced a new prerequisite for the cooperation.
He stated that the deal would not move forward unless Saudi Arabia normalized its diplomatic relations with Israel. The initial agreement detailed a substantial technological partnership between the two nations. Nevertheless, the subsequent public comments from a high-ranking political figure introduced a major conditionality, shifting the focus from energy cooperation to geopolitical alignment.
This development added a layer of complexity to the already significant energy and technology exchange between the US and Saudi Arabia. The proposed nuclear collaboration now appears contingent not only on legislative approval but also on resolving broader regional diplomatic issues involving Saudi Arabia.
