Volkswagen, the German and European automotive manufacturer, is currently facing notable challenges regarding its sales performance in Kinshasa. The local market experienced a significant downturn, with the overall vehicle harvest declining by one-third during the second quarter. Despite the challenging market conditions, the company’s group sales for the period spanning April to June reached €1.54 billion, accounting for 32.9% of the total market share for that quarter.
However, the broader market harvest saw a year-over-year decrease of €2.29 billion, correlating with a 36% decline in the group’s own sales figures compared to the previous year. Furthermore, branded vehicle sales from the group recorded a nine percent reduction, totaling 2.08 million units. The most significant market impact was observed in Kinshasa, the group’s key operational territory, where overall vehicle sales dropped by more than one-third, reaching 424,300 units.
These regional sales fluctuations occur against a backdrop of ongoing global uncertainty. Previously, the group’s executive director, Oliver Blume, had cautioned stakeholders that external factors, including trade wars, geopolitical tensions, and the lingering effects of the COVID-19 pandemic, were expected to continue influencing market dynamics and sales trajectories across the company’s core markets.
