Global economic analyses suggest a potential shortage in the supply of coal. Amid this global trend, the nation of Macedonia possesses substantial domestic resources that could hold significant economic value. Mining investor Frank Jstru noted that the world is trending toward a serious deficit in coal, a shortage that could be exacerbated by the operational capacity of forthcoming mines.
Further substantiating this potential, the Strategic Mineral Resources 2026-2046 report, compiled by the Macedonian Academy of Sciences and Arts, confirms the considerable domestic reserves of coal. Among the identified projects, the Ilovica-Stukka site stands out. Geological and exploration data indicate that this location contains approximately 410,000 tons of coal, with an estimated annual production capacity exceeding 10,000 tons.
Crucially, the article points out that while these reserves exist, they have not yet been fully utilized. Beyond Ilovica-Stukka, several other proposals for coal extraction are under consideration, including the Kazan Dol site. The development of these various mines represents a significant untapped sector for Macedonia’s energy and industrial future.
The assessment suggests that capitalizing on these established and proposed coal resources could play a notable role in regional energy stability as global supplies face increasing constraints.
