Skopje’s Mayor, Orce Gjorgjievski, has announced that municipal assistance will be extended to Gostivar pending the severity of a recent outbreak of a waterborne disease. The mayor indicated that formal support will be mobilized once the number of individuals presenting with symptoms of diarrhea reaches a threshold requiring medical intervention. Concurrently, relevant municipal institutions are initiating an investigation into the source of the water contamination within the city’s main water supply system.
In the interim, immediate measures are underway to mitigate the public health risk. As a precautionary measure, Skopje is currently supplying multiple water tanks to residents of Gostivar, aiming to secure a supply of safe drinking water for a period of up to ten days. Furthermore, the President of the ZELS issued a call to action, appealing to all responsible colleagues and departments to collaborate in managing the escalating situation.
The appeal emphasized that a unified and cooperative response is necessary to effectively address the public health crisis. These coordinated efforts involving municipal resources and institutional cooperation are aimed at stabilizing the supply of potable water and preventing further deterioration of the situation in Gostivar.
