Veto in Poland: Nawrocki blocked a bill for partnership between individuals from both countries

The Polish president exercised a veto on two legislative proposals intended to be incorporated into what are termed “contracts for joint life.” These proposed changes are aimed at improving the legal standing of LGBT people. According to “Roteres,” Poland remains one of the European Union’s few member states that does not guarantee specific rights for LGBT people. Prime Minister Donald Tusk is slated to assume office in 2023, with an announced agenda that includes reforms concerning abortion laws and the rights of LGBT people.

The opposition to these legislative aims was also attributed to the actions of the nationalist president, Karol Nawrocki, who utilized the veto power. The specific legislation in question concerns the status of a “near person” and the “contract for joint life.” Proponents argue that these laws would facilitate the legal recognition of two individuals who are not married but who share a cohabiting life.
