Inspectors from the Food and Veterinary Agency (FVA), alongside police and representatives from the Ministry of Livestock and Rural Environment, conducted an inspection in Gostivar. The investigation was prompted by the public prosecutor, who received reports from citizens regarding disruptions to the local water supply. During the inspection, authorities discovered an illegally installed pump connected to the main pipeline.
This device was found to be diverting water directly from the Vardar river into the municipal system. The inquiry was initiated following widespread complaints from the public concerning the quality and availability of the water. Concerns regarding public health were highlighted, as unverified information circulated on social media and in the media suggesting that more than 1,200 Gostivar residents had experienced stomach ailments.
In response to these reports and the initial complaints, the FVA confirmed that the current water supplied through the Gostivar system is not approved for potable use. The findings underscore significant regulatory breaches concerning the management of the local water resources. The presence of the unauthorized pumping mechanism diverting water from the Vardar river poses immediate risks to public health and violates established water safety protocols.
Authorities are taking action based on the illegal connection, emphasizing the need for adherence to established standards for both water intake and distribution to protect the well-being of Gostivarers.
