New amendments to the Law on Vehicle Operation in Macedonia introduce significant changes regarding who is legally permitted to drive. Under the revised legislation, the minimum age requirement to operate a vehicle has been raised to 18 years old, replacing the previous age limit of 14 years. Furthermore, the amendments establish specific speed restrictions for various pedestrian and cycling areas.
On designated bicycle and pedestrian paths, the maximum permissible speed is set at 20 kilometers per hour. For sidewalks and mixed-use paths shared by pedestrians and vehicles, the speed limit is considerably lower, set at 6 kilometers per hour. These new regulations are slated for implementation following an analysis period covering accidents recorded between 2024 and May 2026.
The data gathered during this time period pertains to incidents involving motorcyclists, electric trotting devices, and motorcycles. According to the preliminary findings, the analysis covers 2,352 accidents attributed to specific causes, resulting in 46 fatalities and 585 injuries. These amendments aim to enhance public safety standards concerning who operates vehicles and where they are permitted to drive.
