The main court in Skopje recently delivered the first prison sentences in a case involving the unlawful surrender of a newborn baby. The proceedings detailed an organized scheme where the infant was handed over to a married couple in exchange for 5,000 euros. According to the court, the incident occurred shortly after the baby was born in Kumanovo.
Instead of returning home with her mother, the newborn girl was given to a couple residing in Skopje. Evidence presented in court indicated that the operation involved more than a dozen individuals. Key participants included a midwife who assisted with the birth, and a doctor who managed the baby’s medical examination and provided financial assistance to the mother.
The prosecutor detailed how several parties were involved in orchestrating the scam, with the midwife and doctor playing roles both during the birth and in the subsequent organization of care and financial support for the mother. The court further noted the comprehensive nature of the conspiracy, which encompassed the planning of the illegal surrender, the organization of the medical examination, and the arrangement of financial aid for the mother. The sentencing marks a significant ruling against the organized nature of the crime.
The legal proceedings highlighted the systematic effort to profit from the illegal transfer of a child.
