WE ARE CONCERNED ABOUT THE ISLAND SETTLEMENTS, and Bugaria is striving to create new ones – and voters

Concerns have been raised regarding the voting opportunities for Macedonian compatriots, with some reporting that the process may not guarantee fair participation. Furthermore, there are reports suggesting that individuals residing abroad who are not considered compatriots are also being marginalized in the process. In parallel developments, the process of granting Bulgarian citizenship has been ongoing for several years.

To date, approximately 8,000 Bulgarians have successfully acquired Bulgarian citizenship. The issuance of citizenship is reportedly being accelerated in regions that present suitable conditions and opportunities for both citizenship acquisition and voting. In neighboring Serbia, the process has shown significant activity over the last few years, leading to an estimated 12,000 to 15,000 Bulgarians obtaining citizenship in the country.

This acceleration of citizenship procedures is noted in areas where conditions for voting and becoming a citizen are developing. Administratively, plans are underway to enhance these processes. In Sofia, for instance, there is a planned increase in the point system for applications, and Bulgaria intends to open additional consulates to facilitate these procedures.

These efforts underscore a continued focus on expanding access to citizenship across various geographical areas.
